What to see in Vicenza

Vicenza is the city of Andrea Palladio: its historic centre and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. In a few hours' walk you can go from the main square to a still-intact Renaissance theatre, all the way to one of the most copied villas in the world. Here's what not to miss during your stay.

It's a pleasant walk but a long one: for shorter travel times we recommend cycling or the bus.

Piazza dei Signori & Basilica Palladiana

Vicenza's main square, dominated by the Basilica Palladiana: Andrea Palladio's first major public work, recognisable for its double-tier loggia. Next to it stands the Torre Bissara, the civic clock tower.

Teatro Olimpico

Palladio's last work, completed by Vincenzo Scamozzi after his death in 1585. It is the oldest surviving indoor theatre in the world, famous for its permanent stage set creating a forced-perspective illusion of the streets of ancient Thebes.

Palazzo Chiericati — Art Gallery

Another Palladian masterpiece, now home to the city's art gallery (Pinacoteca): a collection of works by Veneto artists from the 14th to the 20th century.

Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunciata

The city's cathedral, with Gothic origins and a Renaissance dome partly attributed to Palladio himself.

Basilica di Monte Berico

A Marian sanctuary on a panoramic hill, a pilgrimage site since 1428, reachable from the centre via a long historic arcaded walkway. The square in front offers one of the best views over Vicenza.

Villa La Rotonda

One of the most famous and imitated villas in the world, with its four identical temple-front façades: a model that influenced neoclassical architecture across Europe and beyond.
